2008 - The M.U. Kappa chapter of Pi Gamma Mu received the Joseph B. James Incentive Award for 2008 at the national organization's triennial conference in Atlanta, GA, in October, 2008. The award is given to a new or newly reactivated chapter. The Mansfield chapter was reactivated in 2005 after an absence of more than 20 years. Pi Gamma Mu is the international honor society in social sciences. Along with a plaque, the award also included $100 to encourage the continuation of civic activity. Dr. Janice Purk, associate professor of Sociology, is the chapter's advisor.

2008 - Dr. Tim Madigan is selected as a AYCF-Ford Foundation Teaching Fellowship recipient to teach social stratification at Central China Normal University in Wuhan China during the summer of 2008.
